Animatronics: Dolphin Projects
"Flipper" was one of our first film projects. The original sculpture of a Pacific Bottlenosed Dolphin was created in the late 1980's. The copyright owner, Lorne Michaels (Producer, Saturday Night Live) had to approve the final look. Mr. Michaels also owned the rights to "Lassie" and requested we create Lassie replicas. Some were used for action sequences. The dolphin replicas were also used for action sequences. Anytime that Flipper appears outside his cove, it is an artificial dolphin. One of the replicas was built to tow behind a jetski. Images here show subsequent builds since the 1994 movie. The 2013 version was created for a public aquarium in North Carolina as an educational display. Images present the animation core, body shells, cable connectors, and finished dolphin model.
